Title: Ghost coral
Year: 2024
Size: 795mm diameter
Media: Oil on canvas
Description:
A visual spectacle in its own right, white coral is a ghost of its former past. Bleached white by rising seawater temperatures, plausibly linked to global warming, the corals expel the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues which gave them their vibrant colours. Whilst the coral can survive a bleaching event, it is under stress, which can, and often does, lead to mortality.
