Description:
Red coral is the common name given to a genus of marine corals, Corallium.
Its distinguishing characteristic is its durable and intensely coloured red or pink-orange skeleton. Sadly, static slow-growing coral cannot keep up with intense fishing. A few small corals spread across the Mediterranean cannot reproduce fast enough to repopulate shallow areas that have been previously fished. The fear is that without significant changes to regulations the coral will not be able to sustain fishing pressure for much longer.
