Description:
Alaska is home to a host of marine mammals that reside in its generous coastal habitats.
Its coastal currents function as pathways for marine organisms and the resources on which they depend. They carry with them huge quantities of glacial sediment-laden water from glacial valleys and rivers, which pour into the ocean, including precious quantities of iron which influences the growth of plankton – the base of the food chain.
The Bering Sea to the Southwest is one of the largest marine ecosystems in the world, although over the past 50 years as sea temperatures have increased the fish and marine animal populations have declined.
